History, tradition, culture, etc. are something unique to each and every community. Hence they are to be preserved rightly. Every piece of craftwork from the past, every artwork, every ethnic practise; all are treasures which have to be protected. You would have read these kinds of lines in many places. Apart from the impulsive reaction which makes you feel that you should also do something, have you really given it a deep thought?

There may be thousands of ideas regarding how to preserve the history, how to make sure that our traditions and heritage are not lost, etc. But practising it requires much more effort. We, being part of this preservation community for many years, are very much aware of the hurdles that we have to face in this area. Here we are sharing our experiences with you!

Less interest among people
It is clearly visible from the less participation in the awareness sessions that people are not much interested in this area. The majority are concerned just about the present; how to make it comfortable, that’s it. They are least bothered about the need for preserving history. They often forget that they have a certain set of commitments to the future generation and in their struggle to live, they have less interest in such activities.

The most common excuse is the lack of time, which is not a valid reason. Those having a real interest will definitely find time for such socially beneficial activities. Moreover, it need not be a massive initiative, taking so much of your time. Every small act which is in the right direction and which enable preservation of our tradition and history is appreciable. Do whatever you can, within your available time.

Not much support from authorities
The governmental organisations are mostly for namesake. Most of the commendable works in this field have been done by non-profitable, voluntary organisations. The authorities take up something once in a blue moon and work on it for a long time, often not producing the desired results. Right actions are required from the concerned authorities. Certain rules can be imposed, so that common man is forced to follow them. For example, historical conservation can be done efficiently if there are restrictions on destroying ancient buildings and properties. A lot of resources can also be conserved in this manner.

Lack of funds
As a consequence of the less interest and less awareness, there are very less sponsors ready to contribute in this area. Recently, we conducted certain events as part of our outreach programme, and the only generous contributors were Walmart, Wells Fargo, and I Love Diamonds. Hats off to their commitment and responsibility to the society. We hope for more and more such understanding business groups making their contributions in this highly ignored sector.

Responsibility is ours!
Each one of us has the responsibility to preserve history and tradition. Have a look at www.savingplaces.org, to know more about what are the current trends and requirements in this area. Think of how you can help and then go ahead! Let us fulfil our responsibilities together!
