The Cedar Falls Historical Society is looking for volunteers to assist in helping make it one of the best attractions in Cedar Falls and the Cedar Valley.

Volunteer Opportunities

Administrative Assistant- Volunteer is needed to assist with scheduling, answering phones, greeting the public, etc.  Hours are flexible.

Archivist: Assist the CFHS in cataloging and care of materials located in the museum’s archives.  No prior experience needed!  On-the-job training is provided.  Times flexible.

Board Member/ Council Member- Board members will assist with setting and implementing the goals of the Cedar Falls Historical Society.  Working in coordination with the board, each historic property managed by the CFHS (Wyth House Museum, Victorian House Museum, Little Red Schoolhouse, Behrens-Rapp Gas Station, and the Icehouse Museum) has a management council that works on issues specific to that site. 

Cleaning Person- Person is needed to do light cleaning to our historic sites on a regular basis.  Position would entail dusting, vacuuming, and general cleaning in a beautiful historic setting.

Curator: Assist the CFHS in cataloguing, inventorying, photographing, and managing the three-dimensional artifacts within our collection.  Or, the volunteer may prefer to enter data regarding the collection into the computer system.  We will train!

Docent:  Welcome visitors and/or provide guided tours for any of our sites: the Victorian House, the Wyth House, the Ice House, or the Little Red Schoolhouse.  Volunteer weekdays and weekends in season.

Education Volunteer:  Assist the Educator Coordinator with school tours and in-class programs.  Assist with the planning and implementation of educational programs for the community in general.  You should enjoy interacting with children, ages 4-17. 

Finance Specialist- Assist the Executive Director and the Finance Committee with the financial aspects of the organization, including budgeting, managing checkbook, etc.  A qualified volunteer accountant would also be helpful to the organization.

Grant-writer- Assist the Executive Director in researching grant opportunities, identifying needs within the organization, and writing the applications. 

Grounds Volunteer:  Assist in planting flowers, weeding, etc.  On-the-job training is available.  Times flexible.

Oral Historian- Assist with the identification of suitable oral history subjects.  Assist with making contact with those individuals as needed, and participate in the creation of recorded oral history interviews pertaining to Cedar Falls, Iowa

Publicity Volunteer: Help distribute brochures and flyers to hotels, restaurants, etc. Make press contacts by providing names and addresses for newspapers and local magazines in your area.  Times flexible.

Research Historian- Compile historical information related to Cedar Falls, Iowa for use in exhibits, programs, and archival storage.  Generally, work would consist of collecting data through reading microfilmed newspapers, books, photographs, etc.

Special Events- Volunteers are needed to assist with the coordination of events from planning through completion.  Examples include our Christmas Walk, Sturgis Falls activities, Cemetery Walk, and others.

Standing Committees- Assist with setting and implementing the goals of any of the following committees: Building and Grounds, Bus Tour, Collections, Education, Marketing, Model Railroad, Finance, Fundraising, Garden Tour, Personnel.
